How CBD is a Good Tool to add to your Meditation practice

As part of our Mental Health series, we’re looking at tools you can use at home to manage symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression. During the coronavirus crisis, many people are choosing not to visit their medical practitioner or hospital. The economy is unstable. People cannot visit their loved ones. Many are getting ill from the virus. Therefore, the levels of people suffering from a mental health issue have risen significantly.

Last week we discussed developing a yoga practice and how CBD can be a great supplement to help you remain calm and focused during your exercise. In this week’s article, we explore how CBD is a great partner to another anxiety management tool – meditation.

We’ll discuss what meditation is, how it can help mental health disorders, how to do it, and how CBD can improve your practice.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is training you to be aware of your surroundings and your own thoughts and beliefs. It helps you gain a healthy sense of perspective. It isn’t necessarily about turning off your thoughts or feelings, it is rather about you learning to observe them without judgement. And after practice, you may be able to understand your thoughts too.

Meditation can be a great skill to learn. It is a full body experience that can cultivate awareness and compassion. By sitting with the mind, we are coaching it to be more open and consequently you’ll discover calm, clarity and contentment. We will learn how to have a satisfying experience in the present moment.

Meditation isn’t about emptying the mind or stopping your thoughts. The mind is designed to think; however, meditation allows us to see our thoughts more clearly.

How can Meditation help a mental health disorder?

When we focus on our breath and our mind, we bring a state of calm and serenity to the body.

Life is sometimes difficult (especially at the moment). Our lives can feel particularly busy at the moment. Lots of people are juggling children at home with full time jobs. We can try to find peace of mind to relieve us from the 24/7 monkey chatter we have in our heads. That chatter comes from our own thoughts but also from the information we are digitally overloaded with.

Meditation provides a moment for our minds to reset. To focus on the present and become more aware of what’s taking place around us. Meditation feels different for everyone who practices it but for some the benefits can be life changing. It can improve the emotional and physical quality of life for people who practice regularly.

People who meditate on a regular basis often report feeling happier and more patient. They note lower levels of stress, frustration, depression and pain. Those who have difficulty falling asleep say they experience better sleep. People with anxiety disorders report reduced anxiety. Mindfulness and meditation have been researched thoroughly for many years. There is a large amount of scientific research to support the effectiveness of meditation.

How to Meditate

Follow these basic instructions for a short meditation session.

  • Find a quiet spot where you feel relaxed. Start breathing deeply and focus on each breath.
  • Acknowledge any thoughts that come into your mind then return your focus back to your breath.
  • Do this for at least 10 minutes each day. Extend your meditation time as the weeks go on.

This is a very basic example of a meditation practice. Meditation takes many forms and looks different to everyone. Even 2 minutes of quiet, focused breathing each day can make a difference to your anxiety and stress levels.

Learning to meditate is like learning any other skill. It is like exercising a muscle that you have never really worked out before. It takes a lot of practice to get comfortable and proficient. Each practice will be different, and some will be far from perfect. Sometimes your focus will wander or you’ll forget to concentrate on your breath. That is perfectly ok. It is part of the experience. What is most important is that you continue to meditate consistently, in order to reap the benefits.

There are many tools you can use online to help with your meditation practice. YouTube has a wide range of teachers imparting meditation advice. While you are browsing online, purchase some books with advice on how to meditate successfully. Both the iOS and Android store have apps to download to your smartphone, containing guided meditations.
