CBD FAQs – All Your CBD Questions Answered

CBD is still a hotly discussed topic. Many people believe in the power of CBD, many people don’t. We answer all questions honestly and scientifically.

To make things easy for you, we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions about CBD and put together a list of useful CBD information.

Whatever you want to know, we have the answers right here!

What is CBD?

First up, the question on every newcomer’s lips is, “What is CBD?”

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is one of over 400 phytocannabinoids that naturally occur in cannabis plants. CBD has very low THC which is why CBD doesn’t make people feel high. In fact, some studies suggest CBD can counteract the high feeling caused by THC. CBD has risen in popularity due to its potential benefits for mental and physical health in humans (and pets!).

What is a Cannabinoid?

Ok, we hear you! You know what CBD is but what on earth is a cannabinoid?!

Cannabinoids are compounds that activate cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2), including endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids.

What is a Phytocannabinoid?

Here’s a little more science!

“Phyto” means plant and phytocannabinoids are the cannabinoids naturally occurring in plants like hemp. Many plants make cannabinoids, but hemp plants contain particularly large amounts of cannabinoids, with CBD (cannabidiol) being the most popular.

What is an Endocannabinoid?

This is the fun bit and gives a little clue as to why CBD is so beneficial for the human body.

“Endo” means within. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids produced naturally by cells in the human body.

The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, maintains balance within the human body. Therefore, some studies suggest   that by altering the cannabinoid levels within the body, we can help the ECS create more balance within important functions like sleep, appetite, mood and immune system response.

What is Hemp?

Just like oranges and lemons are both citrus fruits, hemp and marijuana are similar but different!

Hemp, sometimes referred to as industrial or agricultural hemp, comes from the non-psychoactive properties of the cannabis plant, which have 0.3% or less of THC. Hemp is similar to marijuana because they come from the same plant family but are genetically distinct and different in their use, chemical makeup and cultivation methods.

What is Cannabis?

While many people consider cannabis and marijuana to be interchangeable terms, Cannabis is actually a plant family with three different sub-species, of which marijuana is one.

The key differences between hemp and marijuana are that hemp contains a negligible amount of THC but is higher in CBD. It’s used in foods, supplements, skin products, clothing and paper.

Marijuana is generally grown to have higher levels of THC, the psychoactive compound that gets you high. Marijuana generally has lowers levels of CBD.

Will I Get “High” from CBD Hemp Oil?

Here’s some great news! No, you can’t get high from taking CBD hemp oil.

It’s made from legal hemp, which contains 0.3% or less THC, the compound that causes the feeling of being high, normally found when taking marijuana.

Hemp has significant amounts of CBD but contains only trace amounts of THC. Yes, hemp and marijuana come from the same plant family (Cannabis) but they are different plants with big differences.

What Does CBD Do in the Body?

It works in the body’s operating system.

CBD works within your body’s ECS (endocannabinoid system). The ECS helps to regulate a variety of processes like eating, sleeping, relaxation, recovery and cognition. CBD acts upon receptors in the ECS helping your ECS function at its best!

What Are CB1 and CB2 Receptors?

Are you ready for some more science? (How clever are you going to feel after reading this?!)

CB1 is a receptor type in the ECS believed to be located primarily in the brain and peripheral nervous system, activated by all types of cannabinoids. CBD signals the body’s natural mechanisms to activate those receptors to do more of what they do naturally.

CB2 is believed to be located primarily in the peripheral tissues of the immune system, the gastrointestinal system, the peripheral nervous system and to a lesser degree in the central nervous system. It works in the same way as CB1.

What is the Entourage Effect?

Learn how those special cannabinoids work together!

The entourage effect is when various compounds of a full spectrum CBD hemp oil are combined. Therefore, their benefit is greater than what you’d receive from each individual component.

We call this Synergy. Basically, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts! There are over 100 identified compounds in the cannabis plant. While most of these compounds have their own therapeutic benefits, they combine synergistically to provide far better results.

What is THC?

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol and is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. Essentially, it makes you feel “high”.

To be legal, CBD products must contain 0.3% or less THC.

What is Full Spectrum?

Full spectrum is good! It is all the good things you get from a plant.

The good things come from a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes, antioxidants, nutrients and other plant compounds present in the hemp plant. It can provide a greater effect than CBD alone as all the cannabinoids work together. See above, The Entourage Effect.

Is Broad Spectrum CBD the Same as Full Spectrum CBD?

They are not the same!

Broad spectrum typically describes products that do contain some terpenes and cannabinoids, but don’t contain the full ingredients list that could be extracted from the hemp plant.

In many cases, products labelled “broad spectrum” are those in which all THC has been removed. Remember, it’s perfectly legal for CBD products to contain 0.3% or less THC and it is known as a beneficial phytocannabinoid in small doses.

Round up, Round up!

We hope our FAQs have given you plenty of CBD information! Remember, this is not an extensive list of answers and we will bring you more CBD questions in the future.

Another important note, it is really important to know what’s in the CBD you’re buying. UrthLeaf has all their CBD tested by third parties. They’re looking for heavy metals, toxins, THC levels and much more. If you decide to buy CBD elsewhere, be on the lookout for third party testing. It’s the reassurance you need that you are buying a genuinely helpful CBD product.
